NEWS & UPDATES 》 TOFFEE-Mocha WAN Emulation software development - Update: 18-June-2016

In the previous update (17-Jun-2016) I discussed about the upcoming new Random Packet drop feature along with other completed features.

Now I completed the entire TOFFEE-Mocha Random packet drop feature. I completed all the kernel components and the UI support of the same. And to make GUI settings more organized I split the earlier Basic-Settings page into two separate pages namely: Packet Drop and Packet Delay. So this way it is simple to understand settings according to their functionality.

As you can see below the Random Packet drop feature have two options to set. The first option is to enable or disable the feature. The second option is to set its probability. If the value chosen is 1, then it has the probability of a random number between 1-10. So there are more chances that the packet may get drop. And as the way you increase this value to 2 and 3 and so on. The probability of packets randomly being dropped will reduce.

Unlike before you can see there is a dedicated page to configure the Packet delay feature. Here is the screenshot of the new TOFFEE-Mocha updated Packet Delay settings page:

Updated TOFFEE-Mocha Big-Picture Page:
With the new features in place, I need to update the Big-Picture page. With more features in place, I need to organize the content (or settings) shown in the big-picture. So I categorized the Packet Drop settings and Packet Delay settings in the big-picture as shown below:

Live testing of TOFFEE-Mocha Random Packet Drop feature and test results: I did a simple setup with my PC configured as a TOFFEE-Mocha WAN Emulation device. And two laptops connected to the PC's two NIC cards. This way I can send traffic via TOFFEE-Mocha. I enabled the Random Packet drop feature and did three sample tests with drop factor value 1, drop factor value 2 and then finally drop factor value 3. As you can see below statistics depending on the drop factor you can see the probability of packets getting dropped is being adjusted. Here is the live statistics of the same.

Seems there are couple of Inmotionhosting servers are down. And one of the server includes The TOFFEE Project website hosted server. I was in touch with the Inmotionhosting team trying to resolve the same. I found a unique issue that all my website files are intact and the Joomla database. But the Joomla database tables are completely wiped out and missing. Besides there is also a sort of upgrade going on in their servers. Luckily I have the most recent backup of the entire website.

Ever since after I launched my new The TOFFEE Project website on 1-May'2016, I can see there is a steep increase in traffic. Soon after the launch when I monitored its Alexa rankings it was reporting about 12 Million or so. But once it is getting more and more traffic the Alexa rankings shot up and now currently it shows around 2 Million (as on 22-July-2016). Alexa is an excellent tool to monitor your overall website global ranking and indirectly its performance. Unlike Google Analytics which is bound one or other way into Google's SEO. Alexa gives you a second opinion about your website's growth.

Power consumption of my Home Lab devices for research ↗

Here is my power-consumption measurements of various devices deployed within my home lab. I measured via my kill-a-watt sort of power-meter which is fairly reliable and accurate. I checked its accuracy with various standard load such as Philips LED laps and other constant power-consuming devices to make sure that the power-meter is precise.

Today I got a feature request from Jonathan Withers. Jonathan is from a company called MultiWave Australia. He said he is able to get the TOFFEE-Mocha Raspberry Pi setup up and with that he is able to emulate geostationary satellite link. But he requested me is there a way to extend the constant packet delay from 40mS to 500mS. So as a part of his request I supported the same in the current ongoing development version of TOFFEE-Mocha.

Today I have done a test setup so that I can able to connect my Android Samsung Tab via TOFFEE DataCenter. Below is my complete test topology of my setup. For demo (and research/development) context I configured TOFFEE DataCenter in engineering debug mode. So that I do not need two devices for this purpose.

It is quite interesting that there are few web hosting firms are offering direct CDN based hosting services. Since it is a direct CDN based hosting, it is cheap, extremely easy or transparent CDN service. It is transparent, since each time you publish your content in the hosting web-server (origin server), it is immediately is in sync automatically in the user-serving CDN caching machines. Since the hosting vendor and the CDN vendor are all the same, it is also easy to use their services. There is no incompatibility issues, interoperability issues, and better integrated analytics, are all the benefits of CDN Hosting services.

Now I supported and finished complete GUI support of these parameters so that you can configure, store, reboot and the same will restore upon reboot. Besides I complete the TOFFEE-Mocha Big-Picture page. The Big picture is an interface where you can find all the configuration (or settings) of the TOFFEE-Mocha. This is almost similar to CISCO device show all command but in graphical representation. Sometimes a network admin can also print the Big Picture page and paste it near to the device to refer its settings.

Today I finally completed building my own private CDN. As I discussed so far in my earlier topics (Building my own CDN), I want to custom build the same step-by-step from scratch. And I don't want to for now use/buy third-party CDN subscriptions from Akamai, CloudFlare, Limelight, etc as I discussed earlier.
